Now entering its thirty seventh year, this popular ride through the hills of north central Ohio’s Amish country combines a challenging ride with spectacular scenic views, catered meals and snack stops and abundant ice cream stops. Akron Bicycle Club has built this event to attract riders from several states. Following are some tips that organizers can incorporate into making their invitational rides a signature event.

Ongoing Planning Process

Dates for the next invitational are announced at the Riders’ dinner before the current ride is completed. Support with local suppliers has already been reserved contingent on final contracts. The Ride Directors usually commit for several years and consider plans for continuity before stepping down. In the case of the Roscoe Ramble, the Ride Directors are son to celebrate year ten of their services.

Clear goals for marketing and implementation are identified and followed. These include developing a challenging and yet enjoyable route, providing ample hospitality, keeping participation at a manageable level for the area and keeping costs low for the event. The Roscoe Ramble is not considered a profit area for the club at this time.

The planning team is kept functionally small with support for the ride pulled from the general membership of this 400+ club as the ride nears.

Keep True to History of the Ride

The Roscoe Ramble originated when four experienced cyclists met to ride the area one weekend. These men were looking to challenge themselves against some of rolling ribbons of country roads and hills of the area. This is at the heart of the ramble. Observant riders get the added benefit of some exquisite views amid the towering corn stalks and soy fields. They must also be quick at dodging the frequent road apples left by the horse and buggies of the local Amish population.

The Ride Directors realized in 2003 that they needed to scale the ride back from extreme to challenging to meet the needs of a group of riders who want a little less adrenalin in their rides. The main route has moved for the return leg of the ride, shorter ride options have been added and bike trails have been added as options since that time. This flexibility is a main attraction for riders.

Incorporate Local Attractions

The Roscoe Ramble borrows more than its name from the historic Roscoe Village. This restored canal port draws visitors from throughout the continent. It is a charming backdrop for a little R and R for riders after a challenging 75 miles in August weather. Spouses and friends who decide to travel with the riders enjoy a relaxing time shopping in the village or sightseeing in the small towns that support the riders. The buggy and rider logo is an appropriate symbol of the character of the ride.

Never Enough Hospitality

Various overnight lodging including motels, beds and breakfasts and camping are offered. SAG (support and gear) are the ambassadors of the ride. This team of drivers provide, hydration and snacks, crew support and first aid along with ferrying riders in distress to their destinations. The rule of thumb is to anticipate the riders needs and be seen often. This part of the country is known for abundant fresh produce. It is no surprise that the ramble has the reputation for providing some of the best farm fresh cooking as well as high carbohydrate and protein dishes, huge amounts of fresh fruits, lots of hydration stations and frequent rest stops.

Meals are contracted with church groups, Amish families and local volunteer fire departments. Frequent ice cream stops, evening entertainment in Roscoe Village, lodging and shopping all benefit the local economy.
